How To Install Crochet Hair
A beginner-friendly walkthrough: scalp prep, braid patterns, the crochet hook method and the maintenance routine that makes your style last 6–8 weeks.
What you'll need
- 2–4 packs of crochet hair (water twist, passion twist, goddess locs)
- Latch hook or crochet needle
- Rat-tail comb, hair clips, edge control
- Satin scarf or bonnet for nightly care
- Scissors and a small mirror
Step 1 · Scalp preparation
Healthy installs start with a clean scalp. Wash and deep-condition your natural hair, then blow-dry or air-dry fully — installing on damp hair causes mildew. Apply a light leave-in and a few drops of jojoba or castor oil to the scalp only.
Step 2 · The braid pattern
Your cornrow pattern determines how flat and natural the finished style looks. Two patterns work for almost every install:
- Straight-back cornrows — best for straight, twist and locs styles. Keep braids small (8–10 total) and tight to the scalp.
- Beehive pattern — best for curly crochet and middle-part styles. Braid in a spiral toward the crown, tucking ends in.
Step 3 · The crochet hook method
- Slide the latch hook under a cornrow with the latch closed.
- Fold a piece of crochet hair in half and loop it over the open hook.
- Close the latch and pull the hook back through the braid, leaving a small loop.
- Pass the loose ends through the loop and pull tight to form a flat knot.
- Repeat across each cornrow, staggering knots so the parting looks natural.
Pro tip: For a flatter knot, twist the loop once before pulling the ends through.
Step 4 · Sealing & styling
For water-twist and curly styles, dip the ends in hot (not boiling) water for 5–10 seconds to set the curl pattern. For locs and twists, seal the ends with a quick singe or hot-water dip. Trim any uneven pieces last.
Step 5 · Maintenance — make it last
- Nightly: tie down with a satin scarf or sleep on a satin pillowcase.
- Weekly: spritz scalp with diluted apple cider vinegar to keep it fresh.
- Bi-weekly: co-wash gently, squeeze water out, never rub.
- Refresh: use a light mousse on curly styles to redefine.
- Avoid: heavy oils, daily restyling and sleeping on a cotton pillow.
